Who am I?

I’m a retired physicist born and educated in Scotland; a naturalized US citizen living in Texas. My background is in research, the defense industry and in private industry product development. Early in my career my specialty was the applications of laser technology. Later I became more involved with systems engineering and embedded systems. In retirement I still keep interested in science, particularly in Physics, while relaxing with my neighbors playing golf  or indulging my interest in RC aircraft and RC model yachting.

My Background:

After graduating with a BSc. (hon) in Applied Physics (physics with shop class) I went on to graduate school to earn a PhD in Physics. My PhD included laser physics, quantum electronics, semiconductor physics, cryogenics, magnetics and spectroscopy. With that foundation I went on to perform research in the applications of laser technology in chemistry before leaving academia to work in the UK defense industry on the applications of lasers. When I left the defense industry I worked for a small US multi-national high-tech company in the UK before moving with them to Virginia in the USA. I later left that company and joined a US defense contractor in Texas before retiring there.

My purpose in writing this blog is to host essays on science and society and anything else I find fascinating or amusing.
